چکیده
Recently, the 802.11e Working Group (WG) has proposed the Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF), which has a HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) and an Enhanced Distributed Coordination Access (EDCA), in order to provide QoS in WLANs. In this paper an innovative HCCA-based algorithm, which will be referred to as Power Save Feedback Based Dynamic Scheduler (PS FBDS) providing bounded delays while ensuring energy saving, has been developed. The performance of PS FBDS has been extensively investigated using ns-2 simulations; results show that the proposed algorithm is able to provide a good trade-off between QoS and power saving at both low and high network loads.

Energy efficient feedback-based scheduler for delay guarantees in IEEE 802.11e networks
Energy saving algorithms for 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) are basically based on keeping in a low-power state the Wireless Network Interface Card (WNIC) whenever a wireless station does not have frames to be transmitted/received. This can severely affect the QoS of the service provided to higher layers due to the transient time needed to switch from a low-power to a high-power state. Recently, th...

The 802.11e working group has recently proposed innovative functionalities in order to support delay-sensitive multimedia applications, such as real-time voice and video, in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). In particular, the 802.11e proposal introduces: (1) the Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF), which is an improved channel access method aimed at allocating the first-hop WLAN bandwidth t...

The wide spread use of IEEE Wireless LAN 802.11 in battery operated mobile devices introduced the need of power consumption optimization while meeting Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements of applications connected through the wireless network. The IEEE 802.11 standard specifies a baseline power saving mechanism, hereafter referred to as standard Power Save Mode (PSM), and the IEEE 802.11e stan...

The upcoming new standard IEEE 802.11e aims at providing Quality of Service (QoS) support in 802.11 Wireless LANs. While the QoS mechanisms in 802.11e, namely the EDCF and the HCF, have already been defined in the standard draft, the challenge lies in the configuration of these mechanisms in order to provide the desired services. In this paper, we deal with the configuration of the EDCF in orde...
